Land Acknowledgement | Reconocimiento de la Tierra
Before we begin, we pause to acknowledge the land we are currently standing on and our place in it as visitors — not its owners, nor its first residents.
This place stands on the traditional homeland of the Northern Utina, a Timucua-speaking people who inhabited, stewarded, and governed this land for centuries before and beyond European contact, with roots in this region reaching back through thousands of years of history.
We acknowledge that we stand here in our current historical moment because of the persecution, displacement, and loss endured by the Northern Utina and the broader Timucua-speaking peoples of this land. This acknowledgement is part of what we owe our attention to before we speak and pray.
We also honor the Seminole Tribe of Florida and the Miccosukee Tribe as contemporary Indigenous peoples in this state today.
This land carries other layered histories — including the unmarked graves of the soldiers of the 54th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment and the 35th United States Colored Infantry Regiment, who were killed during a Civil War battle fought on this ground.
We do not name these histories to leave them in the past, but to acknowledge their contemporary presence because the same call that brings us here today — to act justly, love mercy, and walk humbly — asks us to see clearly where we stand.
We offer this acknowledgment as an act of humility, as visitors to this land, and as part of the beginning of a much longer conversation that acknowledges and celebrates Indigenous Florida.
Antes de comenzar, hacemos una pausa para reconocer la tierra sobre la cual nos encontramos actualmente y nuestro lugar en ella como visitantes — no como sus dueños, ni como sus primeros habitantes.
Este lugar se erige sobre el territorio tradicional de los Utina del Norte, un pueblo de lengua Tímucua que habitó, cuidó y gobernó esta tierra durante siglos, antes y después del contacto europeo, con raíces en esta región que se remontan a miles de años de historia.
Reconocemos que estamos aquí, en este momento histórico, debido a la persecución, el desplazamiento y la pérdida que sufrieron los Utina del Norte y los pueblos de lengua Timucua en general. Este reconocimiento es parte de lo que debemos tener presente antes de hablar y orar.
Honramos también a la Tribu Seminole de la Florida y a la Tribu Miccosukee, como pueblos indígenas contemporáneos de este estado hoy.
Esta tierra lleva consigo otras historias superpuestas — incluyendo las tumbas sin marcar de los soldados del 54.º Regimiento de Infantería de Massachusetts y del 35.º Regimiento de Infantería de Color de los Estados Unidos, quienes murieron durante una batalla de la Guerra Civil librada en este suelo.
No nombramos estas historias para dejarlas en el pasado, sino para reconocer su presencia contemporánea, porque el mismo llamado que hoy nos reúne aquí —actuar con justicia, amar la misericordia y caminar humildemente— nos pide ver con claridad dónde estamos parados.
Ofrecemos este reconocimiento como un acto de humildad, como visitantes de esta tierra, y como parte del comienzo de una conversación más larga que reconoce y celebra la Florida indígena.
